Earl Lawrence, Experimental Aircraft Association
Just as we are kind of getting used to the TSA making us take off our shoes in airports and making us get special ID's to get to our own hangers on the airport, now we are learning that the TSA is going to be getting involved in the maintenance of aircraft. This is some leftover politics we still have from 9/11 and Earl Lawrence explains the finer points for us. Experimental Aircraft Association (11/24/09)

Fredrick Scheffel, Powerfin
A couple of months ago we learned that Powerfin was closing its doors. Fortunately the product was just too good for entrepreneurs to ignore. Fredrick Scheffel is taking over the manufacturing operation and moving it down to Wharton, Texas. We talk to Fredrick about the move and when propellers will begin being available again. Powerfin (11/24/09)

Jim Sweeney, SweeneyCorp
As we continue our focus on different kinds of Special Use Airspace, we look at Alert Areas. Alert Areas are not the kind of airspace you can't go into, but they are areas where you want to keep an extra eye out for military aircraft. Jim Sweeney tells us why. SweeneyCorp (11/24/09)

Mike Stratman, California Power Systems, Inc.
Christmas is coming sooner than you think. If you are like me, people start asking early what you want for Christmas because you've been good all year and deserve so much. But if you can't give them an answer to that question, you risk the coal treatment come Christmas Day. Mike Stratman is here to help with Christmas ideas to help preserve domestic bliss. California Power Systems, Inc. (11/24/09)

Robert Heimberger, St. Louis Rotocraft Club
Do you realize there are less than 10 hours of sunlight now in the Midwest? And as the days get shorter, they get colder, too. If you want to fly in colder weather, it is time to think about bundling up. Bob Heimberger talks with us about the science of getting warmer. By harnessing insulation, electrical power and wind protection, you can enjoy flying in open cockpits well into the winter. St. Louis Rotocraft Club (11/24/09)

Earl Lawrence, Experimental Aircraft Association
The old saying goes, "You can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family." A corollary to that might be, "You can choose your sport, but you can't choose the other people who are in the sport." Last year a knothead used an experimental aircraft (an old Soviet era jet trainer) to buzz the Santa Monica pier in California. Of course as the story hits the news, all of aviation gets a black eye. Experimental Aircraft Association (11/17/09)

Richard Meredith-Hardy, FAI Microlight Commission
The 2009 FAI CIMA plenary meeting wrapped up this past weekend and as usual a lot happened. Richard Meredith-Hardy, the newly elected president, joins us to report on news about microlight world championships, rules, and even gyroplanes. FAI Microlight Commission (11/17/09)

Jim Sweeney, SweeneyCorp
Of all of the "Special Use Airspace" out there, Military Training Routes (MTR's) are some of the most elusive to pick out on a sectional. However, they are critical to be aware of because they identify routes that military aircraft take to train for high speed, low altitude flying. That can mix rather poorly with our low speed, low altitude flying. SweeneyCorp (11/17/09)

mp3 podcast

Greg Gremminger, Magni USA
Greg Gremminger joins us for an update on ASTM standards for gyroplanes. He tells us about the new standards and how they fit into the rest of the standards that have been established for gyros. Magni USA (11/17/09)

mp3 podcast

Glen Moyer, Balloon Federation Of America
We visit with Glen Moyer from the Balloon Federation of America about getting started in Ballooning. Like most of the airsports, ballooning is winding down its very active season, but there are still ways to get involved in the sport so that you can be poised for spring flying. Balloon Federation Of America (11/17/09)

David Oord, Experimental Aircraft Association
For those instructors who want to continue to train using their E-LSA aircraft, a process is now available from the FAA that allows them to do that. David Oord from the EAA has been working closely with the FAA and explains the news and the process for us. Experimental Aircraft Association (11/10/09)

Dan Johnson, ByDanJohnson.com
The AOPA Aviation Summit finished up this past weekend and of course Dan Johnson was there to represent the fun side of aviation. Dan gives us a report on both the event and what is going on in the heavier side of aviation. ByDanJohnson.com (11/10/09)

Jim Sweeney, SweeneyCorp
Last week Jim Sweeney talked to us about Restricted Airspace. This week he talks about the most common kind of Special Use Airspace over the United States, Military Operation Areas or MOA's. SweeneyCorp (11/10/09)

Van Stumpner, Federal Aviation Administration
By now hopefully everyone knows that they should be checking their E-LSA airworthiness certificates to make sure that they don't expire at the end of next January. Van Stumpner from the FAA explains to us why an aircraft with an expired airworthiness certificate won't be able to be flown ever again as an E-LSA after the end of January 2010 unles it is converted before that date. Federal Aviation Administration (11/10/09)

Bob Howell, Virginia Aviation AMT School
Virginia Aviation is offering a Special Light Sport Aircraft maintenance course just for weight shift control aircraft on March 1-17, 2010. Bob Howell talks to us about how the class is organized and why trike maintenance people can get their LSAR-M certificate in only three weeks rather than almost four weeks. Virginia Aviation AMT School (11/10/09)

Earl Lawrence, Experimental Aircraft Association
Earl Lawrence talks about flying safety and what works to increase it and what doesn't work. Unfortunately when some people want to increase safety, the first thing they think of is increased regulation. That sometimes works, but often it is counterproductive. Experimental Aircraft Association (11/3/09)

mp3 podcast

Jeff Goin, FootFlyer.com
For years powered parachutes and powered paragliders have been flying wings that are similar, but not quite alike. Jeff Goin talks about some of the specifics of powered paraglider wings and we compare them to what is typically found on powered parachutes. FootFlyer.com (11/3/09)

mp3 podcast

Jim Sweeney, SweeneyCorp
Jim Sweeney gets into the specifics of Restricted airspace. One of the most dangerous forms of airspace, it is the airspace reserved for military operations like artillery practice, mortar practice and even air-to-ground missiles. Of course every artillery round that goes up, must come down. That means restricted airspace goes right to the surface, close to where many of us like to fly. SweeneyCorp (11/3/09)

Carol Carpenter, Rainbow Aviation Services
Carol Carpenter finds herself answering a lot of questions regarding which aircraft may be flown as Light Sport Aircraft by Sport Pilots, especially those which are certified as experimental amateur built aircraft or standard category. We talk about airworthiness compliance problems arising from a lack of understanding about the difference between the license pilots are flying under and the aircraft pilots are flying in.
