Earl Lawrence, Experimental Aircraft Association
Earl Lawrence joins us to give us some good news. The Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General (not an office I would expect to hear good news from) delivered a report that said in part, "We determined that general aviation presents only limited and mostly hypothetical threats to security" and does not require the TSA to increase regulatory oversight of the industry. We talk about how that report came about and what it means as well as what aviators are seeing as threats TO aviation. Experimental Aircraft Association (6/23/09)

mp3 podcast

James Wiebe, Belite Aircraft
For years it has been my belief that ultralight aircraft should become lighter, not heavier, with the use of newer technologies and materials. Someone else seems to also believe this and is working to make it a reality. James and Kathy Wiebe acquired the production rights to the Kitfox Lite and are using carbon fiber components to make it meet FAR Part 103 weight requirements. We talk with James about the challenges involved. Belite Aircraft (6/23/09)

mp3 podcast

Jim Sweeney, SweeneyCorp
For light aircraft, low and slow flight in the midday offers dangers that many aren't aware of. Jim Sweeney talks about the hazards of mechanical turbulence. SweeneyCorp (6/23/09)

mp3 podcast

Carol Carpenter, Rainbow Aviation Services
Carol Carpenter discusses misunderstandings many have about the maintenance and equipment side of light sport aviation. We talk about what certificates you need to perform maintenance and inspections on Special Light Sport Aircraft (S-LSA) and some of the things you need to be aware of before you purchase a S-LSA. We also talk about how 16-Hour repairman courses are few and farther apart.  Rainbow Aviation Services (6/23/09)

mp3 podcast

Jason Blair, National Association of Flight Instructors
We catch up with news from NAFI. Jason Blair talks about the revamping of the Master Instructor program and the introduction of the Associate Master Flight Instructor. We talk about what this level of recognition means to students and CFI's alike. We also talk about the FAA's outlook on aviation instruction. National Association of Flight Instructors (6/23/09)

Dan Johnson, ByDanJohnson.com
Dan Johnson talks about how digital gauges are becoming more and more popular in light sport aircraft. Interestingly, what is very expensive for GA manufacturers to bring to market in larger aircraft is much eaier for light aircraft manufacturers to accomplish. We talk about some of the common brands being seen in cockpits today. ByDanJohnson.com (6/16/09)

mp3 podcast

Jeff Goin, FootFlyer.com
The World Air Games have wrapped up and we talk with Jeff Goin, one of the athletes we sent from the United States to compete. He talks about the preparation, Turin, Italy, and the competition itself. FootFlyer.com (6/16/09)

mp3 podcast

Ronnie Smith, South Mississippi Light Aircraft
Ethanol can be an expensive fuel additive, especially if you are converting over from undiluted regular gasoline. Clogged fuel filters and fuel starvation caused by the conversion can be a big problem. South Mississippi Light Aircraft (6/16/09)

mp3 podcast

Dan Bailey, Six Chuter, Inc.
Six Chuter continues to evolve to serve customers, but Dan Bailey is still the owner. We talk to Dan about that and about the passing this weekend of Roger Bean. Roger Bean was a big part of Six Chuter's history and more than did his part for our country, too. Six Chuter, Inc. (6/16/09)

Doug Macnair, Experimental Aircraft Association
Last week we talked about the new General Aviation Caucus that was formed in the US Congress. This week Doug Macnair joins us to talk about how that caucus has already had a success with an issue that has been affecting many pilots, the TSA's almost unfettered policymaking-by-decree practices. In a 219-211 vote, a majority of the lawmakers agreed with assertions from EAA and other groups that the TSA has been using security directives (SD's) to bypass a rulemaking process that should, among other requirements, solicit and consider comments from affected parties. The amendment clarifies the conditions under which the TSA would be authorized to issue security directives, limiting the practice only to situations involving an imminent threat and a finite duration. We get the details from Doug. Experimental Aircraft Association (6/9/09)

Dennis Demeter, AV/Grafix
There is just nothing like a proud parent, especially one that has good reason to be proud. Dennis Demeter joins us to talk about a book he wrote detailing his son's and others challenges to get into and complete the training at the Air Force Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT) program at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. We find out what it's like to be an ultralight pilot who has a son who has gone through one of the most elite flight training programs in the world. AV/Grafix (6/9/09)

mp3 podcast

Jim Sweeney, SweeneyCorp
Jim Sweeney talks about avoiding obstacles in flight. For GA pilots, that normally means just staying above the towers you can find on the Sectional charts. For light aviation in rural areas, aircraft have been known to get just a little lower to the ground. Jim talks about how to have fun, but do it safely. SweeneyCorp (6/9/09)

mp3 podcast

Bever Borne, Air-Tech, Inc.
Fuel cells (or tanks for some of us) are critical parts of a powered aircraft. Not only does it contain the needed fuel, if it stops doing its job and begins leaking, it becomes a hazard on the ground and even a greater hazard in flight. Bever Borne talks about repairs to all types of fuel cells including composite, metal, and plastic. Air-Tech, Inc. (6/9/09)

mp3 podcast

Mike Engel, Wisconsin Powered Parachute Association
The Wisconsin Powered Parachute Association is having their annual fly-in at Mark's Park and Mike Engel joins us to talk about the events and activities scheduled there. Wisconsin Powered Parachute Association (6/9/09)

mp3 podcast

Mike Stratman, California Power Systems, Inc.
Lots of questions remain about exhaust systems and Mike Stratman goes into detail about what exhaust systems are offered for which engines. We even talk about the systems that hold everything together. California Power Systems, Inc. (6/2/09)

mp3 podcast

Robert Bieser, Skymaster Powered Parachute
The aviation metal coating of choice for more and more parts is powder coating. The coating is easy for smaller shops to apply, is relatively environmentally friendly, and provides durable and colorful coatings that are particularly popular with trikes, powered parachutes and powered paragliders. Bob Bieser joins us to talk about what powder coating is and how it works. (6/2/09)
