Russell Marsolek, EAA Chapter 919
Russell Marsolek has discovered a way to combine the hobby of Amateur Radio (ham radio) and aviation. In his Challenger I, he placed a small pack containing a two-meter radio, a gel cell battery, and a GPS.
The radio is programmed to transmit his GPS location every 30 seconds. This signal is picked up by several ground based “nodes” and is then retransmitted. At many “hams” homes are computers with an Automatic Position Reporting System. Those hams are able to see cars, trucks, and now his plane when he flies. RLM Web Site (1/9/07)
