and...
Check Out The Schedule of Sport Aviation Events Below
|
UltraFlight Radio can now be found live on Tuesday mornings right here on the web at www.ultraflightradio.com at 10:00am Eastern Standard Time and 7:00am Pacific Time. But you don't have to hear it live to hear it.
You can also hear (previous shows) at the show archive. We make it convenient for you.
To be a part of the show and you are in the U.S., you can call toll-free: 1-866-613-1612. If you are somewhere that the toll-free number does not work, you can reach us at 1-858-268-3068. Another (often better) way to get questions to us is by E-mail. You can write Roy at roy@easyflight.com
Mark Aldridge, Federal Aviation Administration
Change 1 to the Practical Test Standards for Sport Pilots was just introduced a few weeks ago. We talk with the FAA's author of a lot of those changes about how a PTS fits into the big scheme of things. We learn about what a PTS is required for and what the standards are and are not designed to do. You can download free copies of all of the PTS's by visiting the link: FAA Pilot Practical Test Standards
Brian & Carol Carpenter, Rainbow Aviation Services
The Carpenters report on some good news. They just submitted the weight shift module for the Light Sport Aircraft Repairman Course to the FAA for acceptance. On top of that, they're in the process of putting the finishing touches on the module for powered parachutes. Both modules are scheduled to be offered at the end of October. Brian and Carol talk about these very unique courses and what's included in them. Rainbow Aviation
Erik Pederson, Phantom Aeronautics
It's been awhile since we visited with Erik Pederson. We get an update on the rotary engine he's been testing for aviation use. We also check into the progress on the S-LSA version of the Phantom. We talk about some of the design features being integrated into the aircraft. Phantom Aeronautics
Bever Borne, Air-Tech, Inc.
Bever Borne talks about fuel line. Have you ever wondered why ultralights have clear fuel line but other aircraft don't? Bever talks about that and how and when to maintain the fuel line. Bever can also answer your four stroke and two stroke ultralight aircraft engine questions. Do you have questions? When the show is live, call your questions in at (888) 514-2100 or you can IM them in on Yahoo Instant Messenger to UFRadio. Roy@EasyFlight.com is the address you can use to E-mail those questions in. Air-Tech, Inc
Jim Sweeney, USUA and NAPPF Board Member
Jim Sweeney talks to us about the requirements to report aviation accidents and incidents. He talks about the reporting differences between ultralights and light sport aircraft. Jim also talks about how to determine what kinds of accidents and incidents are reportable and how to make the report. The reference for this discussion is NTSB 830. SweeneyCorp, USUA, NAPPF
Remember, if you have any questions you want to ask the guests or you have any of your own comments about a topic, please call the show toll free when we're live at (888) 514-2100. If you have a show idea or know someone that would be a guest on the show (that could be you!) Contact Roy.
Hope you get a chance to listen in!

And if You Missed The August 8th Show...
You Can Still Get It In The Archives
|
We archive shows for four to six weeks. But for your convenience, you can access segments from last weeks show straight from this E-mail. Just click on the segment number.
If this is the first time you plan to listen to the radio show, you may need to download a copy of Windows Media Player. Don't fret, there are versions for the Mac, too.
Van Stumpner, Federal Aviation Administration
Van Stumpner has just put the finishing touches on an on-line course that will allow existing Amateur Built Aircraft Designated Airworthiness Representatives (DARs) to pick up the additional function code to do the same kind of inspections for Light Sport Aircraft (LSA). He tells us about how that course should help make LSA DARs more available. While we have him with us, we'll also ask how those wanting to become a DAR can do that. Click to download FAA Order 8130-33 (PDF) with the DAR Application Form. Designee Information and Links, FAA Sport Pilot Branch (8/8/06)

Dan Johnson, Light Aircraft Manufacturing Association
Dan Johnson joins us this time to talk about the Light Aircraft Manufacturers Association. LAMA has put together an auditing program that will allow aircraft producers to have an outside set of eyes to verify that they are doing things according to ASTM standards. Dan explains what all that means to LSA owners. ByDanJohnson.com, LAMA (8/8/06)

Rusty Nance, Popular Rotorcraft Association.
Congratulations to Rusty Nance. He was elected the new president of the PRA at this year's convention at Mentone, Indiana. He talks about how the PRA is doing and the changes members can expect. We may even get him to compare flying Army helicopters to flying gyroplanes. Popular Rotorcraft Association (8/8/06)

Gene Smith, Valley Engineering, LLC
This year's AirVenture Convention was good to Gene Smith. He was recognized for his custom power plant on Valley Engineering's 'Backyard Flyer', winning the Ultralight Innovation Award. The Backyard Flyer is a true legal ultralight powered by a four stroke engine. Gene talks about how he did it and the availability of the engines. Valley Engineering, LLC - Culver Propellers (8/8/06)

Terri Sipantzi, Precision Windsports, Inc
With FAA Certified Flight Instructors for Weight Shift Control Trikes so few and far between and with N-numbered trikes almost as scarce, one might wonder how you can get any training that would lead to a sport pilot rating. Not to worry. You can still get training from an ultralight instructor in an ultralight trainer that will apply towards your rating. However, there are a few things you need to be aware of when using this approach. Of course Terri will tell us what those things are and how they apply to more than just trikes. Airborne America (8/8/06)

José Luis Esteban, REAL Federación Aeronáutica Española
The European Microlight Championships for powered paragliders and powered parachutes are hosted this year in Spain. José Luis, Spain's alternate delegate to FAI's Microlight Committee, checks in from the south of Spain to tell us about the event, what kind of tasks the competitors will be performing, and who is participating. European Microlights Championship 2006 PPG & PPT Classes (8/8/06)
